LAGCAR was formed
to create a visible anti-racist voice of lesbians and gay men, and
to help forge the unity needed to defeat racism, homophobia and
bigotry.
LAGCAR believes
that the fight of lesbians and gay men against homophobia cannot
be seen in isolation. We need alliances with all communities — unity
between lesbians and gay men, Black and Jewish communities, the
trades unions and religious organisations, women and disabled people,
students and young people.
LAGCAR believes
people seeking asylum in Britain deserve respect and humane treatment.
We believe aspects of Britain’s asylum law denies this to people
fleeing persecution, torture and social dislocation. Lesbians and
gay men suffer particular discrimination under asylum and immigration
law.
LAGCAR is part
of the National Assembly Against Racism (NAAR). LAGCAR has already
received support from organisations such as Stonewall, Regard, UNISON
National Lesbian and Gay Committee and lesbians and gay men in other
trade unions as well as many individual lesbians and gay men. LAGCAR
welcomes affiliation from lesbian and gay organisations and from
lesbians and gay men. To join us, complete

Founding statement
Racism, homophobia and the activities of the fascist
right are on the rise across Europe. Black and Jewish people, lesbians
and gay men, disabled people all stand to lose from the growth of
racism and reaction.
The fascist and extreme right organisations which
are winning high numbers of votes in many European countries are
violently homophobic. Defeating racism, and the right wing extremists
who feed on it, is a precondition for the preservation of human
and democratic rights.
Every concession by mainstream political parties
and institutions legitimises it and encourages its most dangerous
exponents on the streets and in the parties of the extreme right.
The fascist right can only be permanently defeated on the basis
of an agenda which centrally tackles racism at its roots.
To create a movement capable of confronting and
defeating racism and the extreme right requires unity — unity between
the black and Jewish communities, lesbians and gay men, disabled
people, the trade unions, churches and faiths.
As an important step towards unity in the struggle
against racism, the extreme right and homophobia, we call for support
for the Lesbian and Gay Coalition Against Racism and the Anti-Racist
Charter for the New Millennium launched from the National Assembly
Against Racism in February 1995.
