Anniversary
of the Nailbombings commemorated by urging communities to vote
against the BNP
Saturday 29th April
12-2pm on Old Compton Street (meet outside Costa Coffee)
Lesbian and Gay Coalition against racism, Unite Against Fascism
and the Trade Union Congress have organized flyering of the LGBT
communities in London on the seventh anniversary of the nailbombings
this weekend, urging a vote against the BNP in the general election.
David Copeland stated he nailbombed the Black, Asian and LGBT communities
in order to spark a race war and to turnout the vote against the
BNP. The BNP are standing over 350 councillors, an unprecedented
number of seats. Where they have gained councillors, racist and
homophobic incidents have increased.
Alan Jarman, Convenor of Greater London UNISON said:
" The BNP are explicitly homophobic - they have likened gay men to
paedophiles and an aberration in nature. David Copeland was a part
of their campaign of hatred which saw 3 people killed in Soho,
and we call on all of our community, whether LGBT, black and minority
ethnic or not, to join us in ensuring that you use your vote on
May 4, so that the politics of hate that they try to hide behind
in their public message is exposed, and that we make our communities
places of understanding and that our world class public services
do not have fascists within them."
Stewart Brown, Executive Council Member, Fire Brigades Union
Said
" The Fire Brigades Union stands proudly beside unite against fascism,
and other trade unions, in fighting against the vile hatred of
the BNP in the forthcoming local elections. Our union stands
up too bigotry and hatred, which the BNP spreads like wildfire,
and will fight all over the UK to stop this far right political
agenda. Use your vote on the 4th May."
The Chair of Imaan, the Muslim LGBT group Said:
The BNP are calling this election a referendum on Islam, which
increase hostilities against all Muslims, including the LGBT
community. We urge all those who are opposed to hatred and bigotry
to vote to stop them on May 4th. This election must be a referendum
on fascism and we must reject them.
Denis Fernando, Lesbian and Gay Coalition Against Racism said:
The BNP are a homophobic, racist party. They stand in the
tradition of Hitler who murdered Jewish, Roma, Black and Lesbian
and Gay people as well as trade unionists and many others.
Their initial targets are asylum seekers and the Muslim community
but they also target the LGBT communities amongst others. The
Black and LGBT communities have a duty to stop their message
of hatred in this election by turning out to vote against them.
