Stop the fascist BNP in Thurrock

23/11/05

DAY OF ACTION: SUNDAY 27 NOV
11am, MEET AT GRAYS RAIL STATION (FENCHURCH STREET LINE)

Thurrock Unite Against Fascism are calling on all local and London supporters to help leaflet Grays Riverside and the Homesteads wards with local Unite Against Fascism leaflets this Sunday 27th Nov.

The BNP is standing candidates in two by-elections in the Grays Riverside and the Homesteads wards, Thurrock council.

A hoax leaflet has been distributed in both these wards. The leaflet has shocked local communities and appears to be an attempt by the extreme right to stir up racism in the area. It is not clear which organisation is distributing this leaflet. The leaflet is in the name of "The London East Islamic Movement", which no one - including established Muslim organisations - appears to have heard of. The leaflet uses Unite Against Fascism's logo without obtaining authorisation and mentions Thurrock UNISON - a local trade union branch. UAF and Thurrock UNISON have contacted the local police, and an investigation is underway.

The leaflet UAF will be distributing will alert people to the hoax leaflet, and urge people to use their vote to stop the BNP.

The BNP previously won a by-election in the Grays Riverside ward in September 2003. However this councillor was defeated in June 2004, after a major campaign against the BNP.

In areas where the BNP has councillors incidents of racism and homophobia have risen.

In June this year the Standards Board for England and Wales reported that the BNP could be described as a Nazi organisation. Help us keep Thurrock Nazi free.

The last time the BNP won a council by-election was in Goresbrook in September 2004. With help from supporters we have defeated the BNP in all by-elections since then. Please help us to defeat the BNP again.
