Celebrity Big Brother 2008 axed as racism proves unpopular

Channel 4 has confirmed that it is axing the 2008 series of Celebrity Big Brother and admitted that there is an "issue of supply and demand" which was making it harder to book celebrities.

A spokesperson for the NAAR said:
The show is a casualty of the widespread revulsion at Channel 4’s failure to challenge or stop the racism against Shilpa Shetty. Over 40,000 people complained at Channel 4’s refusal to step in and stop celebrities from making the kind of racist abuse that is experienced in schools and workplaces across the country appear acceptable. It is not surprising that celebrities now don’t want to be associated with it.

All broadcasters would do well to take this as a warning of public intolerance of such crude racism and ensure their programming meets the standards expected in the 21st century.
