The family of Jay Abatan, a black man who was murdered in a racist attack on 24th January 1999 in Brighton held a candlelit vigil outside Sussex police station. Jay's murderers have still not faced trial. Over the last 9 years, Jay's family have received support from Doreen Lawrence, mother of Stephen Lawrence, The National Assembly Against Racism and the trade unions UNISON and PCS amongst others.
Many questions surrounding Jay Abatan's death remain unanswered – including questions about the conduct of the police during the investigation of Jay's death. Two reports have shown serious flaws in the investigation, which was being conducted at the time that the Lawrence report was declaring the police to be institutionally racist.
Both Jay and his brother Michael were members of trade unions at the time of the attack. The event was featured in the local press and radio. For more information on how you can support the Justice for Jay campaign click here.
