Your vote can stop the BNP getting elected

03/06/09

There is a very real danger of the BNP winning seats in the Euro elections if not enough people vote. The time to act is now! Your vote could mean the difference between the BNP winning and losing.

The vast majority of opinion polls in recent weeks have put the BNP on between 5–7% nationally, indicating that the BNP are on course to gain 3 MEPs.

The most recent Telegraph YouGov poll on 1 June, the biggest poll so far with over 5,000 people surveyed, put the BNP on 7% nationally of those certain to vote nationally and 6% of all those surveyed.

The North West, Yorkshire and the Humber and the West Midlands remain key BNP target regions, but this poll indicated that the BNP could be within less than 1% of gaining a seat in London, and within less than 2% of gaining a seat in the East of England (See graphs below).

Some political commentators have used recent opinion polls to write off or play down the threat that the BNP might get its first Euro MP seats. As Unite Against Fascism believes has stated, such arguments are dangerously complacent and run the risk of undermining the effort to mobilise the anti-fascist vote on 4 June.

In the last 10 months we have witnessed the worst financial crisis and economic recession since 1929. In Britain unemployment now stands at 2.2 million and looks set to rise further. The BNP has been attempting to exploit people’s hardship to spread their hatred up and down the country, and more recently is attempting to exploit public anger at MPs’ expenses.  This is being dramatically reflected in polling.

Your vote can make a difference! The lesson of Europe is that stopping such a breakthrough by fascists is much easier than reversing it. The BNP can be stopped in these elections but only if people vote. If you don’t vote you help the BNP. That is why every democrat should make sure they go out and vote tomorrow.
