TUC and MCB join to challenge Islamophobia
An important agreement reached between the trade union movement
and the Muslim Council of Britain at September’s TUC Congress,
committing both organisations to work together to promote understanding
and tackle discrimination.
The TUC is an umbrella organisation of trade unions representing
seven million people. The statement published notes that 69%
of those of Pakistani or Bangladeshi origin are classed as poor
compared to the national average of 22%. It also condemns the
whipping up of Islamophobia by some in the media, after the July
7 attacks last year, and the threat posed by the British National
Party.
The TUC committed itself to ‘use its networks to counter
widespread misunderstanding of Islam and the way the religion
relates to modern society’.
Students Unions should look to the partnership as an example
of the approach needed to combat Islamophobia on our campuses,
and create an inclusive environment free from intolerance and
racism.
